How to Create a Minecraft Texture Pack: A Step-by-Step Guide
Have you ever had an idea that you want to bring into Minecraft? This article gives an in depth guide on to how to make your own Minecraft texture pack
!
Step 1: Download the default Minecraft textures
Make sure to select the version of the game you want to modify by clicking on the files button.
Click on the version you want to modify and then download.
Step 2: Extract the zip file
Extracting the files from the texture pack will transform the texture pack into your own workspace. Note: this can be done to any texture pack you want to customize.
Start by right clicking the texture pack download and then clicking the extract all button. Once started, this process will take a couple minutes to finish.
Step 3: Add a description and photo
Start by opening the pack.mcmeta file with the notepad app or any text editing software.
You can change the description of your texture pack here.
The texture pack photo can be changed by editing the pack png minecraft file. In order to work properly the photo must be in .png format with an aspect ratio of 1x1, which basically means the photo is in a square shape. I recommend editing the pre-installed photo with the free paint app preinstalled in windows.
Step 4: Cleaning your workspace (recommended)
Although this isn’t necessary, I highly recommend deleting folders and files that aren't used in your texture pack. This will both reduce file size and streamline the texturing process.
What folders should I keep?
If your only planning on editing textures, delete everything except the textures folder; but here are some cases I recommend for keeping some of these folders.
Blockstates: Useful for advanced texture configuration (eg. textures variations).
Lang: The folder allows you the change the names of items and blocks.
Models: Useful for creating custom item/entity models.
Texts: Allows you to edit Minecraft end credits, splashes, and more.
Step 5: Adding your first texture
In this example I’m going to change the texture of a dirt block. Here’s how to do this:
Go to the block folder and search for dirt. Once this is done, right click the dirt block and open it with a photo editor, I use the free paint 3D app.
Step 6: Saving your textures
For most apps, this is as easy as clicking Ctrl + S. If this doesn't work, make sure to export the file as a .png and replace this file with the original dirt texture.
Repeat this process to edit more textures
Step 7: Cleaning up (Recommended)
Once your done creating textures, it is important to remove unchanged textures. Here’s how your can do this.
In file explorer click on the sort button, more, and sort by date modified in ascending order. This will allow you to see what textures have been edited.
Once in this view, click Ctrl + A to select all and then Ctrl + Click on the textures you have modified. Then you can just delete all the other textures. If you plan to make more textures, I recommend keeping a spare copy of VanillaDefault to the textures you want to edit.
Repeat this process and delete unused folders in the texture folder. Once this is done, you have a texture pack ready to export!
Step 8: Exporting and sharing
Back up back into the main texture pack folder as seen on the left and select all three files. Right click and compress to a zip file.
This zip file is your finished texture pack! Make sure to name this file as this will be the pack name. Now your ready to add it to minecraft!
On windows, click Windows + R and copy this directory and press enter:
C:\Users\liamw\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\resourcepacks
This is the Minecraft texture pack folder.
Just drag and drop the texture pack into this folder and now all that’s left is testing!
Step 9: Testing
Launch Minecraft and apply texture pack. Start by opening the menu and clicking resource packs.
Click on your texture pack and apply!
